How we measure
We believe the organisation that holds others accountable must be transparent about how it measures its own impact. Here is exactly how we collect and report our metrics.
Data sources
- Programme registration data (participant count, demographics, completion)
- Follow-up surveys at 12 and 24 months post-programme (STEM pursuit, career outcomes)
- Partner university enrollment data (with partner consent)
Data collection methods
- Digital forms (programme registration, post-programme surveys)
- Phone follow-up interviews (for non-respondents to digital surveys)
- Partner data sharing (university enrollment, internship placement)
Verification
- Cross-checking: programme attendance verified against registration records
- Sampling: 10% of follow-up survey responses verified by phone
- Independent review: key metrics (girls reached, STEM pursuit rate) verified annually by an external reviewer
Bias prevention
- Self-selection bias: acknowledged — participants who choose STEM programmes may be more likely to pursue STEM regardless
- Survivorship bias: we track all participants, not just successful ones
- Recall bias: follow-up surveys limited to 12–24 months to minimize memory degradation
What each number counts
- Girls reached
- Counts campers who completed a full week, not people who attended a talk. A school assembly of 400 is not 400 girls reached.
- Women mentored
- Counts completed pairings of six months or longer. Pairings that ended early are excluded, and there have been some.
- STEM pursuit rate
- Measured at the twelve-month follow-up, against participants we could still contact. Our contact rate is 81%; the 19% we lose could move this figure, and we say that every time we print it.
- Countries
- Means a programme with local leadership and a local safeguarding lead, not a single visit.
A number without a method behind it is a decoration. If we cannot tell you how we counted something, we do not publish it.
What we don’t measure
Our metrics have limitations. We measure girls reached, but not every girl completes a programme. Our STEM pursuit rate is based on self-reported follow-up surveys 12–24 months after programme completion, which is subject to response bias. We don’t yet measure long-term career outcomes beyond 5 years. We publish these limitations because the organisation that holds others accountable must be transparent about its own.
