Digital Environmental Footprint
We ask the aerospace industry to measure its environmental impact and publish the result, including the parts that look bad. This page applies that standard to us.

How we measure it
Your browser records the exact number of compressed bytes it transferred to show you this page. We read that number, multiply it by the energy each part of the system uses per gigabyte, and multiply that by the carbon intensity of the electricity involved. It is the Sustainable Web Design model, version 4 (opens in a new tab), applied to a real measurement. We do not estimate our footprint from an average page.

Electricity is counted at 494 grams of CO₂e per kWh (global grid average), or 50 grams for the data centre layers where green hosting is independently verified. Your own device and network always count at the grid average, because no hosting choice of ours can change the electricity reaching your home.
Our budget, and what happens when a page breaks it
Every page on this site is held to 0.2 grams of CO₂e per view, 500 KB of total transfer and 200 KB of JavaScript. The check runs against every public page and fails the build when a page exceeds any of them, so a heavy page cannot quietly ship.
- Fonts are self-hosted and subset, so no third party learns what you read.
- No video autoplay, no carousels, no tracking pixels, no advertising network.
- Images are served at the size they are displayed, in modern formats.
- A hard limit of three third-party scripts per page, on an allowlist.
The current per-page measurements are published in our repository as the digital carbon audit, and summarised in the transparency report each quarter.

Our target for moving the unverified layers to a verified green provider or region is Q2 2027. Until then, every carbon figure we publish counts them at the grid average — the less flattering assumption.
Carbon-aware routing
Our edge network routes visitors to the nearest point of presence for latency, not to the region with the lowest grid carbon intensity at that moment. No configuration option exists for us to change that on the current plan.
Sending traffic through whichever region has the cleanest grid at that moment is a Phase II commitment, targeted at Q2 2027. Saying it is planned is not the same as saying it is done, so we say which it is.
What these numbers cannot tell you
- A model is not a meter. The Sustainable Web Design model is the best open method available and still carries its own uncertainty.
- A website is the smallest part of any organisation’s footprint. Programme travel matters more, and is reported separately in the transparency report.
- We measure the bytes we send. We cannot measure the electricity your device draws while reading, only estimate it.
- Third-party payment scripts on the donation page do not report their transfer size to us. Their bytes are excluded from our page totals and that exclusion is recorded in the audit.
Check our figures
Anyone can measure this site independently with the Green Web Foundation’s tools and compare the result with what we publish. If your measurement disagrees with ours, tell us and we will correct the page or explain the difference.
